Overview
Shutting down the RBMK-1500 reactor at Oakridge is a skill all operators must master. It can save your job or prevent a devastating nuclear fallout.
Typically, shutdowns occur at the end of a shift or for realism purposes. Follow this guide carefully to ensure safety.
Note: If the reactor becomes unstable (low water, high pressure, or scram), refer immediately to the Emergency Procedures page.
Shutdown Checklist
Call the Grid Controller and pick Go Offline.
Do this by clicking on the left telephone's recever, dialing 7782, once it connects, pick Go Offline
Stage One
Reduce Reactor Power[i]
- Go to the Center Reactor panel and type the numbers 3400 into the Auto Control Rods keypad and click the grey button to set.
- Insert control rods in a symmetrical pattern, the selection of control rods is not limited to 12 whilst inserting rods.
- Watch the water temperature, if it goes lower than 400, lower one Main Circulation Pump to its lowest setting on both sides.
- Do not reduce power too quickly, take time with the reduction of power as it could result in a turbine trip.
Deaerator Configuration
- Disable Deaerator Auto Control.
- Set Deaerator Inlets, both A and B, to 0%.
- Set Deaerator Outlets, both A and B, to 50%.
Prepare TURBINE B For Rundown
- Close Turbine A-B Bleed Valve.
- Enable the Bypass Valve for Turbine B.
- Set the Automatic Bypass for Turbine B to 50.
- Set the Bypass Valve of Turbine B to 60%.
Stage 2
Rundown Turbine B
- Set Automatic Bypass for Turbine B to 0.
- Wait for the Generator Output of Turbine B to decrease Below 10 MW.
- Go to the Plant Circuit Panel and Disable Generator B.
- Disable the Auto Bypass Valve for Turbine B.
- Decrease Turbine B Turbine Valve to 0%.
- Decrease Turbine B Bypass Valve to 0%.
- When pressure in both steam lines is identical, open Turbine A-B Bleed Valve.
Shutdown Unnecessary Sub Systems
- Disable Condenser Coolant Pumps B1, B2, B3, B4, and A3, A4.
- Disable Feedwater Pump 2.
- Disable Condensate Pump 2.
Lower Reactor Thermal [ 2100 MW ]
- Enter the numbers 2100 into the Auto Control Rods Keypad and click the grey button to set.
- Reduce Main Circulation Pumps A2 and A1 to speed 2.
- Insert control rods.
- Keep an eye on Turbine A generator output. DO NOT LET IT DROP BELOW 100MW.[i]
Stage 3
Call Grid Controller
- Call the Grid Controller and pick Clearance.
Plant Startup Transformer
- Ensure plant power usage does not exceed the maximum load of 30MW.
- Prime G1<64A if not already primed.
- Press the G1<64A Button.
- Ensure 64B-M breaker trips, if not automatically disabled, disable.
Rundown Turbine A
- Enable Turbine A Bypass Valve.
- Set Automatic Bypass of Turbine A to 0.
- Wait for Turbine Generator A output is Below 10 MW.
- Go to the Plant Circuit Panel and disable Generator A.
- Disable Turbine A Automatic Bypass Valve.
- Reduce the Turbine Valve of Turbine A to 0%.
- Set Bypass Valve of Turbine A to 100%.
Initiate Reactor Soft Scram
- Set Reactor Mode to 0.
- Acknowledge Mode Conflict.
- Set Main Circulation Pumps A1 and A2 to speed 1.
- Disable Shutdown Control Rods.
Offline Core Cooling
- Enable OCC Circulation Pumps 1 and 2.
- Enable Heat Exchanger Valves A and B.
- Click the Reset button next to the Acknowledge button.
Stage 4
Feedwater and Condensate
- Wait for Reactor water temperature to fall below 212.
- Disable Condensate Pump 1.
- Disable Feedwater Pump 1.
Turbine Turbine Gear.
- Call Engineering and Click Turning gear, Enable Turbine B Turning Gear.
- Put the phone back and pick it back up and call Engineering again and enable Turbine A Turning Gear.
Disable Main Transformer
- Disable 18M-G1 Breaker.
Remaining Systems
- Disable all Condenser Coolant Pumps.
- Close Turbine and Bypass Valves.
- Disable Automatic Feed Limiter.
- Disable Automatic Hotwell Limiter.
- Disable Automatic Control rods.
- Close Reactor Isolation Valves.
Purge Remaining Steam
- Using Pressure Relief valves 5 and 7 remove any remaining steam until the steam lines A and B are below 50 PSI.
Request Inspection
- Ensure all rods are inserted and the OCC is functional.
- Call Engineering and click Inspection (this will only work if you're on the very last day of work).
